Arina had been feeling unwell lately. Her legs were swollen again, and none of the doctors’ advice seemed to ease the constant aching heaviness. The pregnancy had not been easy, but by the seventh month she had almost learned to live with the discomfort that seemed to weigh down her entire body.

“Shh, my little girl, calm down… Everything’s all right, sweetheart,” the expectant mother whispered, gently stroking her belly.

Her daughter had always been active, but today she was moving especially restlessly, as though she somehow sensed that something important was about to happen.

Suddenly, Arina’s phone vibrated.

She flinched and looked at the screen.

It was a notification from her bank:

“95,000 rubles have been credited to your account.”

Arina stared at the message in surprise, then smiled happily.

“Well, look at that. Daddy finally sent us some money,” she whispered dreamily to her unborn daughter. “Soon we’ll buy you a crib, little clothes, and everything else you need…”

She assumed Sergey had finally found the money they needed to prepare the nursery.

For the past several weeks, the couple had been arguing about expenses. Arina insisted they still had many essential things to buy before the baby arrived, while Sergey became irritated every time she brought it up, accusing her of being demanding.

Almost every day, her husband frowned and repeated the same complaint.

“Arina, my business is barely surviving! The company is losing money. You spend far too much. You need to control yourself, or soon we won’t have anything left!”

Sergey’s company supplied construction materials. It was a family business that had existed for many years. He regularly complained that it was barely profitable, yet he refused to shut it down.

To him, the company was more than a business. It represented his past, his father, and family traditions he was terrified of destroying.

Knowing how often Sergey complained about financial problems, Arina was genuinely surprised that he had suddenly sent her such a large amount.

She opened the banking app just to make sure there had been no mistake.

And then she froze.

Under the transfer was a note.

“This is for you, my darling Nina, my joy… And for our son, who will be born soon… I love you!”

Arina’s vision darkened.

The room seemed to spin around her.

Had she been standing, she probably would have collapsed.

She patted her cheeks, forcing herself to breathe, then wiped her eyes several times and read the message again.

Nina.

Their son, who would be born soon.

A woman’s face instantly appeared in her memory.

There was only one Nina among the people they both knew — the daughter of her mother-in-law’s close friend.

Could Sergey really have been secretly seeing her all this time?

And was Nina pregnant too?

The answer seemed painfully obvious.

Apparently, Sergey had been financially supporting his beloved Nina for months, and the 95,000 rubles had been intended for her as well.

Caught up in his web of lies, he had simply transferred the money to the wrong woman.

“All right then…” Arina muttered through clenched teeth once she understood what had happened.

She had always been an emotional person, but now she forced herself to remain calm.

Suddenly, she remembered something her mother, who had passed away years ago, used to tell her:

“A smart woman doesn’t let emotions control her. You can cry later. First, protect yourself.”

Arina wasted no time.

She took a screenshot of the transfer, saved the bank receipt, and waited for her husband to come home.

Sergey returned at midnight.

He often came home late, always claiming he had urgent matters to deal with at the company.

When he noticed that his wife was still awake, he asked coldly:

“Why are you sitting here in the dark? Inventing more pregnancy problems again?”

Arina pretended not to hear the insult.

“How was work today?” she asked calmly.

“Nothing good. There are hardly any orders,” Sergey replied with a sigh. “You really need to cut your spending. I’m exhausted from earning money for all your little wishes. Think about the future and learn to save.”

Arina almost laughed.

Only hours earlier, the man had attempted to send 95,000 rubles to another woman, and now he was lecturing his pregnant wife about saving money.

“All right,” she replied evenly. “Have some dinner and get some rest.”

Sergey went to bed and quickly fell asleep.

Arina remained awake until dawn.

While her husband snored in the bedroom, she sat in the living room and slowly went through his phone.

She had never done anything like that before.

Arina had never been the kind of woman who searched through someone else’s private messages.

But now she needed evidence.

Conversation after conversation opened before her eyes.

And the more she read, the more horrified she became.

It turned out that Sergey’s mother had known about his relationship with Nina for a long time.

Her mother-in-law had never been particularly warm toward Arina. She had always dreamed of seeing her son married to her friend’s daughter.

Sergey had chosen Arina instead.

But apparently, that choice had not lasted forever.

Now he was secretly involved with Nina, and his mother could barely hide her delight.

“My dear Seryozha, how are you? Is everything all right? I understand how difficult it must be living with that hysterical woman, but just be patient a little longer…”

“Nina is such a calm woman. Nothing like Arina!”

“The most important thing is making sure the apartment stays in the family.”

“Let her give birth first. Then we’ll decide what to do…”

As Arina read the messages between Sergey and his mother, she was stunned by how hypocritical people could be.

But the final message from her mother-in-law shocked her more than anything else.

“Don’t worry, Seryozha. Once the baby is born, she’ll be occupied with the child all the time. That’s when you’ll be able to arrange everything properly and keep the apartment for yourself…”

Arina put the phone aside and closed her eyes.

So that was their plan.

This was no longer simply about her husband cheating on her.

His entire family was preparing to push a young mother out of her own home and leave her standing on the street with a baby in her arms.

The apartment was registered in Sergey’s name, but Arina had paid the initial deposit.

To raise the money, she had sold the country house she had inherited from her mother.

Never in her worst nightmares had she imagined that one day her own husband would try to take everything away from her.

Fortunately, Arina was far from foolish.

All the documents, receipts, and financial statements were still safely stored in her files.

Sergey and his mother probably assumed that pregnancy had made Arina helpless and confused.

They likely believed that once the baby arrived, she would be too exhausted and overwhelmed to defend her rights.

They were badly mistaken.

Arina still had two months before her due date.

That was enough time to prepare herself for the fight ahead.

She copied every document she could find — bank statements, transfers, receipts, contracts.

She also photographed her mother-in-law’s messages in which she and Sergey discussed their future with Nina in the apartment Arina and Sergey had purchased during their marriage.

For the next several weeks, Arina behaved like the perfect wife.

She cooked dinner for Sergey, asked about his company, and even apologized for being tired and emotional during the pregnancy.

Sergey relaxed completely.

He continued coming home after midnight, convinced that his wife suspected nothing.

Meanwhile, he quietly planned how to leave her with as little as possible.

His mother encouraged him every step of the way.

One day, the older woman visited Arina carrying a bag stuffed with secondhand baby clothes.

With an artificial smile, she said:

“Arina, don’t waste money buying new clothes. I bought this whole bag from an advertisement. There’s plenty inside. Throw away whatever is too worn out and wash the rest. Most importantly, stop putting pressure on Seryozha. He already has enough problems. You need to be calmer. Men don’t like women who are constantly dissatisfied.”

Arina simply nodded.

By then, she had already spoken with a lawyer.

She had also contacted Lyubov Igorevna, the accountant at Sergey’s company. The woman had only recently started working there and had immediately noticed several irregularities in the financial records.

“I don’t want to get dragged into this,” Lyubov Igorevna said nervously when Arina approached her about maternity leave, since Arina herself also worked for Sergey’s company. “If something happens, I’ll be the one everyone blames.”

But their conversation revealed far more than Arina had expected.

The company Sergey constantly described as practically bankrupt was not actually losing money.

Orders had decreased, but nowhere near enough to explain the financial disaster Sergey constantly talked about.

Instead, Lyubov Igorevna had discovered something much more troubling.

For the past six months, Sergey had been secretly withdrawing company money through fake invoices and shell accounts.

He had also been using illegal schemes to reduce the taxes the business owed.

Some of the money went to Nina.

Another portion went to his mother.

That explained why neither Sergey nor his secret girlfriend immediately noticed that the 95,000 rubles had accidentally been sent to Arina instead of Nina.

Sergey had been hiding the company’s real income not only from his wife, but from the authorities as well.

“If the tax inspectors discover this, your husband is going to have very serious problems,” the lawyer said, letting out a low whistle when he saw the scale of the hidden transactions.

But Arina was in no hurry to report Sergey.

She had something else in mind.

That Sunday, her mother-in-law decided to host a family dinner for her birthday.

She invited relatives.

She invited friends.

And she invited Nina.

Nina entered the apartment carefully, one hand resting protectively over the slight curve of her stomach.

Young and attractive, she practically glowed with happiness.

She seemed certain that she was only moments away from defeating her rival once and for all.

Arina showed no surprise at seeing her.

She sat calmly at the head of the table in a light-colored dress, quietly eating fruit.

“Well,” her mother-in-law announced once everyone had taken their seats, “thank you all for coming. It means so much to me. Family must stay together. Without family, life loses its meaning.”

“I completely agree with you,” Arina suddenly said.

The guests turned toward her, assuming she was about to make a birthday toast.

But Arina had no intention of congratulating her mother-in-law.

Instead, she pulled out a flash drive and waved it gently in Sergey’s direction.

Her husband immediately tensed.

“What is that?” he asked.

“Family business,” Arina replied confidently. “We’re all family here, aren’t we? So I suppose I can speak openly.”

She opened a folder on her tablet.

One by one, she began displaying the evidence.

Screenshots of transfers.

Bank statements.

Financial documents from Sergey’s company.

Private messages exchanged between Sergey, his mother, and Nina.

All three of them stared at her in stunned silence as they slowly realized what was happening.

The final document Arina placed on the table was a written agreement.

Under its terms, if the couple divorced, the apartment would become Arina’s sole property.

“This is the agreement, Sergey,” she said. “The apartment stays with me and my daughter. Everything else can be divided equally. You have two choices. Sign it, or I send everything I have to the tax authorities and let them investigate your financial schemes.”

A terrifying silence fell over the table.

“You’re bluffing!” her mother-in-law hissed.

“You’re welcome to find out,” Arina replied. “But keep in mind that hiding income and manipulating company accounts on this scale could have very serious legal consequences for your son.”

Her mother-in-law grabbed at her chest.

Sergey had turned ghostly pale.

Then Nina suddenly spoke, her voice trembling.

“But Seryozha… you told me she didn’t understand any of this! You said you’d be able to take everything away from her!”

“Be quiet!” Sergey snapped.

Then he turned toward Arina.

“What guarantee do I have that you won’t turn us in after I sign?”

“None,” Arina answered coldly. “You’ll have to take my word for it.”

Sergey had no choice.

He signed the agreement.

At that very moment, Arina felt a gentle kick inside her belly, almost as though her daughter had somehow sensed her mother’s victory.

“You’re going to regret this!” her mother-in-law managed to say as she watched her son sign away the apartment.

“You know,” Arina replied as she gathered the papers, “my mother was right. A smart woman deals with the problem first and lets her emotions out afterward. But she was wrong about one thing. After winning, I don’t feel like crying at all.”

Arina took the signed agreement and left.

A month later, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

She named her Vera, after her late mother.

The apartment remained hers.

And eventually, an investigation into Sergey’s company began after all.

Someone had anonymously submitted documents exposing suspicious financial activity to the tax authorities.

Sergey’s mother was furious when the inspectors arrived.

She became so upset that she even ended up in the hospital complaining of heart pain.

Nina disappeared from Sergey’s life almost as quickly.

The moment she realized that Sergey was now drowning in debt and legal trouble, she decided she wanted no part of his problems.

There was one complication, however.

Both mothers of his children filed for child support.

Apparently, Sergey would have to sell much of what he owned simply to cover his debts and financial obligations.

From time to time, Arina still remembered how her former husband and his family had treated her.

But she regretted nothing.

If anything, she was proud of herself.

Only a few months earlier, she had discovered that everyone she trusted had betrayed her at once.

But she had not fallen apart.

She had stayed calm.

She had protected herself and her daughter.

And now, with her baby beside her and the past finally behind her, Arina was ready to begin her life again from a clean slate.
